Audiences at Hannah McPhillimy performances often tend to lean in attentively – she’s an artist with something to say, and produces an extraordinary sound that is both epic and intimate, filled with mixed emotions and powerful hooks, she delivers them in a voice with a big range and lots of dynamics: occasionally hushed and warm, like her piano playing – and at other times bold and confident. The multitude of moods suggested by the beautiful stained glass flower window, upstairs at the Indian Community Centre, seemed to be an appropriate backdrop – especially as the winter sun was rising over north Belfast beyond.
